Shirley Stallings has been working in colored pencil since discovering the
medium in 1992. As a psychiatrist she found that creating art with colored
pencil provided the control and concrete visual results that balanced her professional work. Over the years, Shirley’s compositions have varied in subject matter, but have always been inspired by light, pattern, and color.

A Signature Member of the Colored Pencil Society of America, Shirley has been awarded the Merit Certificate for acceptance into ten annual CPSA International Exhibitions. Shirley was the first artist working exclusively in colored pencil to be juried into membership in the prestigious Women’s Painters of Washington.

Shirley’s work has hung in national and international exhibitions throughout the United States. She has twice been a finalist in the annual Artist Magazine competition and her colored pencil paintings have been featured in 5 books. Shirley has received many First Place and Best of Show awards in juried shows in the Pacific Northwest and hangs in many public and private collections in the area.

Shirley has always enjoyed doing portraits of both the human and animal members of her family. "Ready Yet?" a portrait of her pug Jazzy has been featured in the Northlight book Strokes of Genius 3 and received an Award of Outstanding Achievement at the 21st Annual CPSA International Exhibition. In recent years Shirley has focused on doing commissioned pet portraits and supported her interest in pet rescue by donating custom portraits to rescue fundraisers.
